Giugliano tops the timesheets to end two-day Aragon test on a high
All riders improving on the second day, Rea crashes uninjured but edges teammate Sykes.
The second and last day of private testing at Alcaniz’s MotorLand Aragon was held in sunny and warm conditions that allowed all riders to continue with their on-track duties and data gathering. The rider to set the quickest time of the second day was Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) who clocked a 1’50.2s to end the two-day test on a high note following a further 49 laps completed on the Spanish track. It was a similar outcome for the other factory Ducati rider Chaz Davies, who says he is really happy at how the 2015 version of the 1199 Panigale R is working despite the differences to last year’s machine. The Welshman was only 0.3s slower than his teammate today.
Davide Giugliano: “We managed to set good times over a single lap but this was not the goal of our test. We mainly worked on our race pace and I feel there is still a lot to do before the start of the season. We were quick straight out of the box because chassis wise our bike is very close to the one we used last year, while other teams have to make bigger changes. I feel really good on the Panigale and I’m looking forward to getting back on track at Jerez next week.”
Former WSBK Champion Tom Sykes had a sizeable workload to go through as he evaluated new parts for every area of his Ninja ZX-10R. The Briton also focused on trying to find suspension settings that work well in conjunction with the new electronic system. Sykes recorded a fastest lap time of 1’51.2, with new teammate Jonathan Rea even quicker as he set a competitive 1’51.1 despite crashing uninjured shortly before noon, only to return to the track two hours later.
Kenan Sofuoglu was joined today by former Italian Supersport Champion Stefano Cruciani who helped him test two different versions of the ZX-6R that were made available to the Turkish rider by Kawasaki and the San Carlo Puccetti Racing Team. The bike that will be selected by the three-time WSS Champion will be the starting point for winter development, which comprises a significant ten-day overall testing schedule before round 1.
Spaniard Jordi Torres had a chance to try out the EVO-spec version of the ZX-10R – that won the EVO title in 2014 with David Salom – as part of the Media Test organised by the Kawasaki Racing Team MotorLand Aragon.
Day 2 (unofficial) 1 – Davide Gugliano 1’50.2 2 – Chaz Davies 1’50.5 3 - Jonathan Rea 1’51.1 4 – Tom Sykes 1’51.2 5 – Kenan Sofuoglu 1’54.3
